The Calamity of the Mountains is an event that took place around 200 years before the events of Knighthood, after The Battle of Arkan. It is unknown what exactly occured, but the end result was the land of Arkan becoming mostly sealed off from the rest of the world, with only a small shoreline accessible via a Portal repaired by the Portal Master.
